Constructing a Novel
“I decided to take part in the course because I had a story to tell. I had spent two years researching it, and had written down about 5000 words of it, but I wasn’t sure if I would be able to sustain the momentum of writing a whole novel and the thought of it sometimes seemed overwhelming when viewed in the context of a busy life. I hoped that the course would be give me both motivation and confidence.
I thought the course was particularly well structured, and I have made significant progress in the writing of my book. I am now really grateful that I have the key crux points of my novel written as they have given me an anchor from which to write from, and a point to return to when I get stuck. It was also helpful to watch podcasts where even established writers confessed to sometimes feeling that their work was unsatisfactory. Knowing that having periods of a lack of confidence or belief in your work is not confined to aspiring novelists is very encouraging.
The tutor was excellent. She gave me a lot of encouragement and she made me believe in myself and more importantly the story that I am trying to tell. I think one of the best things I came away with was some self-confidence. And the 500-word synopsis which I can now send on to literary agents.”
